2010 Eagle and Badge Gala

On August 21, the 2010 Eagle & Badge (E & B) gala will take place once again at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel. Presented by the LAPPL’s Eagle & Badge Foundation, the “In the Line of Duty Legacy Awards” will honor individuals who have had a major impact on the community and established remarkable legacies in our City. E & B Foundation President Arthur M. Kassel announced that Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa; Frank McCourt, the owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and L.A. Marathon; and L.A. County Sheriff Leroy D. Baca will be honored this year. Special recognition will also be given to the LAPD Medal of Valor recipients and the USMC Law Enforcement Foundation. “We are also confirming a surprise honoree to be announced shortly,” according to Kassel.

Kassel will join last year’s two honorees, KCBS Sports Director Jim Hill and L.A. City Council President Eric Garcetti, in co-hosting the event, which will begin with a cocktail reception, silent auction and the LAPD Experience — offering guests the opportunity to mingle and meet with various divisions and special units of the Department, from SWAT, Bomb Squad and Underwater Dive Team to the Canine Unit. The evening will include a gourmet dinner, served at 7 p.m., followed by the awards tributes and headline entertainment. Special guests and participants will be announced in the coming weeks.

This year’s Dinner Committee chairs include Chief Charlie Beck and Robert M. Hertzberg, Esq., of Mayer Brown. Kassel serves as the gala event chair and executive producer with LAPPL Director and E & B Vice Chair Peter Repovich.

Co-chairs confirmed to date include the Hon. John Burton; Hon. Gray Davis; Chris Essel; Hon. Eric Garcetti; Hon. Wendy Greuel; Tommy Lasorda; Chris Modrzejewski; Hon. Alex Padilla; Hon. John Perez; Hon. Mark Ridley-Thomas; Alan J. Skobin, Esq.; Sylvester Stallone; Hon. Carmen “Nuch” Trutanich; LAPPL President Paul M. Weber; Hon. Zev Yaroslavsky; and Hon. Dennis P. Zine, an E & B founding board member.

Funds raised will benefit the Eagle & Badge Foundation, which provides much-needed financial support for police officers and their families, along with the children and community-based organizations in the community they serve. The E & B also serves the Tichi Wilkerson Kassel Parkinson’s Foundation, which funds research and special-needs cases of those afflicted with Parkinson’s disease. Last year’s gala was attended by over 800 friends from the business, political and entertainment communities, helping the foundation to raise funds and provide over 40 grants.
